Vikings Crazy Seasons Reviewed

If you think about it, the 2010 season crazyness may have actually started a year ago with that crazy game against the Chicago Bears in Chicago. The Bears burst out to a lead, only to have it evaporate to with the Brett Favre to Sidney Rice Touchdown.
2009 in review
Game tied, lady luck has been kind to the Vikings all year, Brett Favre had not thrown 50 interceptions, Percy Harvin falls in the Draft to the Vikings who needed just that type of player (Special Teams/Slot Wide out). Sidney Rice grows into a number one wide receiver, Adrian Peterson rushs for TD after TD. The Williams Wall (Kevin Williams, Pat Williams) get a Minnesota judge to continue to delay the Star Caps issue. Phil Loadholt plays well enough to be a starting right tackle in the NFL. Brett Favre came out of retirement to play for the Vikings. The Vikings cut Bobby Wade, and sigh Greg Lewis, Percy Harvin gets gassed running too many fly patterns in the 49ers game, Greg Lewis gets in the game and catches the game winner that all Viking fans will remember for al very long time. Am I forgetting something?
So the Bears game had Adrian Peterson fumble the ball away to allow the Bear’s Jay Cutler throws the next ball over the head of Antoine Winfield, Game over, Vikes lose and the Crazy begins.
That OT loss to the Bears help contribute to the Vikings not being able to steal away home field from the Saints, it was key I know some of you would argue that it really made no difference, but the Vikings had no business losing that game. That loss gave the home field advantage away for certain. Any how that led to the Vikings playing at the Superdome instead of the other way around.
NFC Championship game
The Vikings dominate the entire game, other then the turnovers, just showing how important turnovers are in a game. Funny thing is that they still have a chance to win the game. With Time running out, they are marching down the field for a game winning FG, it looks like Favre is going to to it again. But then someone loses count and they are flagged for too many men in the huddle. The play needs to be changed, from a run to a pass, Brett Favre steps up, no one in front of him and he could probably run for a first down, but no, he sees Percy Harvin, but funny thing is that he sees him late and throws an interception. The game goes to Overtime and that Saints win the coin toss and Cedric Griffin is injured on the kickoff. With the second best CB on the team out of the game they go after that side of the field? Ben Leber is called for a pass interference that probably could have been left uncalled like so many in the NFL are. The Saints easily get into FG range and kick one through to go to the first Super Bowl in Saints History.
Sidney Rice Injury
During that game Sidney Rice was injured and someone did not handle that situation correctly. Either the player did not report how serious the injury was or the team did not respond to how serious the injury was or neither the player or the team really understood how serious the injury was.
Cedric Griffin Injury
Not as weird after play as the Sidney Rice injury, but significant. Cedric Griffin injured his ACL against the Saints on a Kick-off coverage in OT. The Cedric works hard in the off season to get ready and did play two more games before injuring the other leg ACL.
2010 Draft
I cannot be sure of this but the way the first round was rolling out, the player that I thought the Vikings were targeting was Kyle Wilson DB, but instead the NYJ took him, which really confused me. The Jets already had Antonio Cromartie and Darrelle Revis. So even if that wasn’t the player that the Vikings wanted, the Vikings seemed rather confused and made a strange move. They traded the pick to the Detroit Lions!!! What why would you help a division opponent, unless you figure that there is absolutly no way that the Lions could challenge you for years to come. So the Lions took Jahvid Best RB and the Vikings took Chris Cook DB. Not that either player won’t work out in favor for one or the other teams, but it was strange to see a trade with in the division (even with the Donovan McNabb Trade fresh in everyones minds).
2010 Preseason
Teams with distractions do not win Superbowls, and perhaps regular season games. With the Sidney Rice injury in full force gale. The Brett Favre staying in Mississippi was getting out of hand once again. Although this can hardly be called a distraction as this is the third or fourth straight preseason that Brett Favre has had turmoil around him and his pending retirement. The Vikings sent three players down to his home to get him on a Monday during what should have been practice. Ryan Longwell, Jared Allen and Steve Hutchinson flew down and arrived just at the time that Brett was getting ready for bedtime!!??? it was only like 9PM, perhaps this explains why the Vikings have not played well in night games with Brett at QB?
More weirdness was all the talk about two QB’s in particular, ok well one QB and one WR. Sage Rosenfels was not getting any rep. time down in Mankato. Joe Webb a WR taken in the late rounds was a QB in Collage, and was impressing coaches with his arm. This coming from a team that did not like the QB that they had taken in the Second round a few seasons earlier. So much did they not like this guy Tavaris Jackson, they traded to get Sage Rosenfels, and eventually brought in Brett Favre to make sure that he did not get to be the regular Starter. (That was hard for me to write, as I am a Tarvaris Jackson Fan and I think he will be an ok to above average QB for some team in the NFL).
2010 Regular Season
Opening against the Saints
The Vikings opened the season where they had ended it and all the talk from the press was revenge. The Vikings were going to come in and dominate the way they had the last game, but cut down on turnovers. Adrian Peterson had carried a football shaped bowling ball around for some time and this was suppose to cure him of his fumbling problems. (Not that I like fumbles but many of the fumbles were great jobs by the opponent stripping the ball).
The Saints won the toss and took the ball and shoved it down the Vikings throat, with precision and grace. The Vikings rally back in the 2nd quarter with a FG and then a Touchdown from Visanthe Shiancoe. But that was the last the Viking Offense was really seen in this game.
Loss to the Dolphins
The game against the Dolphins with extra days to prepare and playing at home, makes it sound like an easy win. Well the Dolphins rushed the ball as a team for about 150 yards and only threw the ball 15 times. Signs that something was wrong with the defense. It was also the worst game of Favre’s career (to date). Brett threw four interceptions and two of them were at the goal line
Randy Moss
In a surprising trade the Vikings traded for Randy Moss just after he went catchless on a Monday Night Football game. And he came dirt cheap compared to the Benny Sapp trade. I should have known that this was not what it seemed. This season was doomed, and this is just another crazy part of the season.
Loss to the Jets
Monday Night football, I was so pumped. Apparently I forgot this was the season that would die a horrible death. The Vikings forgot to show up for the first part of the game, 35 minutes or so? This was also the start of the Jen Sterger/Brett Favre sexing business started. I had read about this back in August, and was really confused as to why was this being shoved in the faces of America now…. I forgot this season the Vikings were doomed. The one bright spot of the game and possibly the season, Favre threw up a pass that should have been just another interception, but ol’ 84 came down with it. In the end, Favre did miss a wide open Harvin that could have changed the game. Another interception,Another close loss.

while looking through the top approximate value leaders the top five (8 with ties) shows that two separate Vikings are on the list for a total of three times. So I wondered how much of a roster I could build using this single season best AV from the site.

Brett Favre status for final game
January 2, 2011 § 1 Comment
Vikings | Frazier ‘going to be tough’ for Favre to play Sat Jan 1, 09:06 PM
ESPN.com reports that Vikings interim head coach Leslie Frazier commented on Brett Favre’s playing status in week 17. “I don’t think he’s going to make it,” Frazier said. “It’s going to be tough.”
Our view: Not the way that Brett Favre wanted to finish his career. Sunday is likely the final time we’ll see Favre in the NFL. |

For those seeking one final huzzah from Minnesota Vikings quarterback Brett Favre may be out of luck. Favre wore a red non-contact jersey on practice Friday but did not participate in any drills. Interim head coach Leslie Frazier has not addressed the media in regards to Favre passing post-concussion tests which would clear him to play on Sunday. “I’m going to just leave it as doubtful for now, without going into any detail about it,” Frazier said. “If we leave him doubtful, it should cover things with him. Never rule him out.”
Favre passed an initial post-concussion neurological examination, but is still unlikely to play Sunday at Detroit. “I don’t think he’s going to make it,” Frazier told ESPN. “It’s going to be tough.”
Recommendation: Favre still has to pass a conditioning test without showing symptoms in order to be cleared to play. Joe Webb will likely start against the Lions.

Favre watches practice, doubtful: QB Brett Favre joined the Vikings on the field for practice Friday, though he wasn’t participating in drills and is listed as doubtful for Week 17 at Detroit. Coach Leslie Frazier wouldn’t say if Favre had taken or passed the concussion test. Favre had his red quarterback jersey on but no helmet while the Vikings went through their workout. He didn’t take part in any of the activities during the portion of practice that reporters were allowed to watch. Favre appeared to be in a good mood, doing a little dancing on the side during stretching and warmups. Favre is recovering from a concussion that knocked him out of the game against Chicago on Dec. 20. The Vikings play their last game on Sunday at Detroit and rookie Joe Webb is expected to start at quarterback.

Vikings’ Brett Favre is day to day
December 8, 2010 Comments Off on Vikings’ Brett Favre is day to day
Well Brett Favre fans can breath easy, probably easier than him. Not sure if that off-handed joke was about the condition of his body or the fact that Jen Sterger Group is breathing down the commisioners neck.
Anyhow, Brett is going to play, I firmly believe it, But I am a Tarvaris Jackson Fan. I have been wrong before, I thought that the year of the Jets, Brett and the Vikes should hook up, it didn’t happen. 2009 I was opposed to number four joining the team. In 2010 I was for him returning to the team. 0-flipping 3.
A Monday MRI didn’t turn up any major news about Brett Favre‘s right shoulder. It’s sprained, but nothing catastrophic. He is considered day-to-day, and interim head coach Leslie Frazier reiterated Monday that Favre will start if he’s healthy enough to do so. “If the doctor says he’s fine, he’s functional and Brett feels good about it, it won’t be a hard decision,” Frazier said, via the Minneapolis Star Tribune. “Between what the medical people tell me and what Brett tells me, we’ll make a decision based on that.” Frazier also said Favre would rest during the week and that surgery isn’t necessary. Favre was injured on the Vikings’ third play Sunday against the Bills as he was hit from behind and driven to the ground. If he is able to start against the Giants this week, it would be his record-extending 298th consecutive start.
Fantasy Analysis:
The Giants aren’t exactly the friendliest defense for a broken quarterback. If he’s limited, he’ll still want to start. I just hope Frazier and the Vikings play it smart and don’t feel like they are obligated to Favre. They should just go to Tavaris Jackson now, but they probably won’t. The biggest question for fantasy owners right now when it comes to Favre or Jackson is how the former will affect a now-healthy Sidney Rice. They were great together last year, but 2009 Brett Favre is a long ways away. Rice and Jackson had a pretty nice connection going Sunday. Granted, that was against the Bills’ defense.

Does it matter if Brett Favre return after Injury against Bills
December 5, 2010 Comments Off on Does it matter if Brett Favre return after Injury against Bills
In todays game Brett Favre extended another record, threw another interception and showed that he just might be too old for NFL football, oh yea he also got injured and left the game after just three plays. The might have been just the spark the Vikings needed (as well as ridding themselves of Brad Childress). The Viking Offense kicked into 2009 mode and scorched the Bills for 38 points. 38 points that is the kind of output the Viking fans have expected all season long. Instead have gotten nothing but interceptions, losses and injuries.
Tarvaris Jackson, the guy was just at the grocery store in a small town in Wisconsin signing autographs on Tuesday. The line to see this guy was ten times the line when E.J. Henderson was there just a year earlier. I guess what they say is the backup QB is always is the most popular player on the team. He played awesome and played like Favre, throwing INT and TD left and right and marching the team up and down the field. And his reward, after the game Leslie Frazier says that there is NO QB controversy on this team, once Brett is ready to play, he will play and START!!
So the turn the game around after a slow start with<a title=”Sidney Rice TD” href=”http://www.nfl.com/videos/minnesota-vikings/09000d5d81ca767b/QB-Jackson-to-WR-Rice-31-yd-pass-TD” target=”_blank”> this play.
The bulk of those 38 points came in about five minutes near the end of the first quarter and the start of the second quarter.
Not much else to write about this game other then the season is really over. With the Saints, Packer, Bears, Giants, Eagles, and the Falcons all winning this week, that only leave one wild card spot that the Vikings would even mathematically qualify for.
The Division would take a near miracle to win, if Detroit could have just hung on to the lead they had to day, then we would start to hear all the Vikings Fans starting to chatter about the playoffs. The Saints loss in week one is the biggest obstacle that has led this team astray. That loss means that the Vikings are unable to win a tie-breaker with them, and the best the Vikings can do is match the 9 wins the Saints have. The Falcons now have 10 wins so the Vikings are unable to catch them. That leaves the Eagles, Giants, and Packer all with eight wins, we already know that we do not have tie breakers with the Packers due to two losses, we play the Eagles and Giants yet as well as the Bears. So that sliver of mathematical hope still exists for either the last wild card spot or the division title. BUT the Packers and Bears need to start losing allot more.
Kraig Urbik injured overshadowed by Brett Favre injury
December 5, 2010 Comments Off on Kraig Urbik injured overshadowed by Brett Favre injury
Kraig Urbik, Played football for the Wisconsin Badgers after playing for the Hudson (WI) Raiders high school football team. Lost in the other injuries of the day (Brett Favre, Geoff Hangartner, and the injuries leading into the day, Adrian Peterson, Percy Harvin, Steve Hutchinson.
In just his second start ever, Kraig was forced to move to center after Hangartner’s injury and did a good job on the former probowlers Kevin and Pat Williams. The Bills had ten minutes of game time that the Defense did not show up for, or the sleeping Giant woke up in the Vikings offense.
Tarvaris Jackson replaced the injured Brett Favre who lasted just three plays. Those three plays by the way were enough to extend his record of 297 concecutive starts. Jackson then through an interception that was returned for a touchdown. Bills 7 Vikings 0. It started to look like the people that were reporting that the Bills were the best two win team out there, and much, much better than the two win season that showed so far. But that seemed to be just what the Vikings sleeping Giant offense needed. A shot in the arm, or a new QB??

Bills RG Kraig Urbik left Sunday’s game in the fourth quarter with a right leg or knee injury.
It could be anything from a torn knee ligament to a broken leg. Either way, we’re almost certain that Urbik’s season is over. He could put no weight on the leg, and was carted off the field. The Bills have lost two offensive linemen in the game, forcing LG Andy Levitre to center. It’s no surprise, then, that they lost the center-snap exchange at the Vikings’ goal-line on the same drive Urbik went down. The Vikings are dominating.

Urbik, Hangartner update
Both Geoff Hangartner and Kraig Urbik sustained knee injuries in Sunday’s game and did noit return. Head coach Chan Gailey provided an update.
“Not good,” said Gailey when asked about the severity of their injuries. “(We’ve) probably lost both of them.”
Urbik replaced Hangartner at center in the first half before getting injured himself in the fourth quarter.
If both cannot go next week against Cleveland the Bills are hoping to have Eric Wood back from his ankle injury next week to play center with Cordaro Howard the likely right guard in such a scenario.
